As part of Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division’s Victory Week celebration, a special ceremony will be held to honor children of fallen Soldiers. The Ceremony of Remembrance will take place Tuesday (June 12) at 5 p.m., at the Calvary Parade Field. Fourteen children will be presented with a medal during this special ceremony. This is the fourth time Fort Riley has held a Ceremony of Remembrance.

The Junction City Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 1400 block of Calhoun Saturday, June 9th around 6:45 p.m. The call required: 2 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, 2 Medic Units and 1 Command Vehicle staffed by 14 personnel. On arrival they found 3 apartments of a 12 unit apartment building well involved. The fire was controlled in 30 minutes, but the three apartments involved received heavy damage from not only fire, but dark gray smoke. PITTSBURGH (AP) Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings, Neil Walker had three hits and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Friday night for their 10th victory in the last 13 games. Bedard (4-6) allowed two runs and five hits as Pittsburgh captured the opening game of a series for the sixth consecutive time. STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)   Josh Holliday has been hired as Oklahoma State’s baseball coach, becoming the first former Cowboys player to lead the program. Holliday played in two College World Series for Oklahoma State in 1996 and 1999 and said upon his hiring Friday that he had always hoped he’d get the chance to be the head coach of the program. He most recently was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for three seasons, and before that was an assistant at Arizona State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and Oklahoma State. (AP)   The New Orleans Saints have hired a firm run by former FBI director Louis Freeh to conduct an internal investigation of the NFL club with the aim of getting to the bottom of allegations ranging from wire-tapping during games in the Superdome to the bounty scandal. John Vratil says he’s not running for re-election this year, a decision that will leave moderate Republicans in the Legislature without one of their most visible leaders. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A lawsuit that alleges that St. John’s Military School in Salina allowed and encouraged abuse of cadets will go to trial in October 2013. The Salina Journal reports federal Magistrate Judge Kenneth Gale set the trial date earlier this week, along with several other deadlines. Seven former cadets at the school allege in the lawsuit that the school encouraged older students to discipline younger ones by beating and otherwise abusing them. The school has denied the allegations. Gale’s order gave plaintiff’s attorneys until Oct. 26 to propose a settlement. The school has until Nov. 23 to respond…
