Kansas State University students Erin White of Overland Park, and Rachel Hoppins of Wichita, have been named finalists for the 2012 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Out of 587 students that applied for the scholarship, Hoppins and White are among 191 candidates from 124 colleges and universities who have advanced to the final round. As finalists, they will participate in scholarship interviews March 5 in Kansas City, Mo. Scholarship winners will be announced March 30. First in the nation among all public universities in Truman Scholarship recipients, Kansas State University has had 33 students awarded the scholarship. The Riley County Police Department will be paying extra attention to seat belts in the upcoming weeks. Beginning next Monday, the Riley county police department will be working with other Kansas Law Enforcement agencies in addressing the problem of teen deaths in traffic accidents. In particular, the Riley County Police Department will focus its attention in the are of the Riley County High school both before and after school. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A federal judge has postponed the sentencing hearing for a mechanic who fled to Ecuador after he was charged with stealing aircraft parts. Former Cessna Aircraft Co. mechanic Diego Alejandro Paz Teran was to be sentenced Monday after he admitted selling stolen parts on eBay. Teran returned to the U.S. after charges were filed. Most of the stolen parts were used or taken from a scrap pile. Sentencing was rescheduled for March 5 after a Cessna employee was unable to answer questions about the value of the stolen parts. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will give the annual Dole Lecture in April. The Dole Institute of Politics announced in a news released Monday that Mitchell will give the address April 4 at the institute in Lawrence. Mitchell was a U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from January 2009 to May 2011. Before that, he served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1995. He was Senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A spokesman for a northeast Kansas district attorney says his office plans to begin setting up interviews this week with legislators who had private meetings with Gov. Sam Brownback at his official residence. Chief of State Lee McGowan said Monday that Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor’s office has not started interviews because of its caseload. Taylor, a Democrat, is investigating the legality of seven meetings that the Republican governor had in January with GOP members of 13 legislative committees. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Supporters of the arts in Kansas say a proposal to raise additional revenue for the art programs will help but won’t replace state funding. The House last week approved a plan to allow taxpayers to dedicate a portion of their annual returns as a donation for arts programs. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Monday that the check-off is intended to raise money to offset Gov. Sam Brownback’s decision last year to delete $689,000 in funding for the Kansas Arts Commission.
