After playing baseball for three years, Riley County senior Wade Hageman made the most of his one season as a Falcon on the links.  Hageman completed a dominant campaign by winning the Sand Greens individual state title on Tuesday at Mankato CC.  He carded a 69, and won a playoff over Devon Freeman and Jordan Walter, both of Rock Hills.  Riley County had to settle for second in the team standings, as the Grizzlies claimed a 24-shot victory on their home course.  The Falcons turned in a 310, with Tosh Taylor coming in 9th with a 77, with John Burnett…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Wade Miley pitched seven sharp innings, John McDonald drove in the first run with a bunt single and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 Sunday.  Miley (5-1) limited the Royals to five hits while throwing 99 pitches.  The rookie walked two and struck out three, sending Kansas City to its 17th loss in 22 home games this season.  David Hernandez and J.J. The Rock Creek USD 323 special election numbers are in, with Question One passing, but Question Two failing during Tuesday’s voting. 297 voters said yes to Question One, with 231 saying no. Question Two’s vote total was 299 no and 228 yes.  Question one dealt with classroom additions at St. George and Rock Creek, a new strength/conditioning building, as well as renovation of the gymnasium and bleachers at the football stadium, and resurfacing of the parking lot. Question two, which again failed, dealt with the baseball-softball field that would be located at the junior-senior high school campus.

2012 is not even half over, but Manhattan’s City Commission looked ahead to 2013’s budget at last night’s work session. Director of Finance Bernie Hayen presented Commissioners with a comprehensive overview of how the numbers for next year stack up, which included many different factors and department budgets. Many issues were discussed at length, including tax rates, operating costs for the pools in Manhattan, and a host of other budgetary issues.  Update on missing teen ! The runaway girl from Emmett reported earlier this week has been located.   15 year old Savanna Kochaniek was found Thursday afternoon in Topeka. Detectives from the Pottawatomie county sheriff’s department following up leads located her at a relative’s house in Topeka and she was taken into custody by Topeka Police . TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has signed massive cuts in state income taxes into law. Brownback signed the bill during a Statehouse ceremony Tuesday. A contentious debate continues about whether the cuts will usher in economic prosperity or create massive budget problems. The law will cut individual income tax rates for 2013 and eliminate income taxes for the owners of 191,000 businesses. Coupled with a sales tax reduction already scheduled for July 2013, the income tax cuts would provide $231 million in tax relief for the fiscal year beginning July 1. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Lawrence school officials are considering asking voters to approve a new bond issue next year to make upgrades at the city’s elementary schools. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Tuesday that the board agreed to begin developing the plan. It could include adding space to remove portable classrooms and upgrade kitchens at the schools. Improving traffic patterns at the schools is another possible target of the bond issue. The board decided in April not to consolidate any of the elementary schools in eastern or central Lawrence.
