The best 24 boys and girls the Sunflower State has to offer will be on display on Thursday night in the Kansas Basketball Coaches’ Association all-star games. Manhattan High’s Connor Brooks will be suiting up for the South squad at Lee Arena in Topeka. Brooks led the Indians in scoring at 16 points per game, shot 38 percent from three point range, and also averaged 2.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 3 steals a night. If you’re looking for a way to cool off from the heat the Sunset Zoo has you covered. The zoo’s annual Water Safari takes place on Saturday, August 6th from 9:30am – 5pm. Children 12 and under will receive free admission throughout the day. Zoo Marketing/Development Officer Ella Todd says the day will include water activities in the afternoon such as Slip-N-Slide, a Spray-N-Splash from the Manhattan Fire Department, animal ambassador programs, a photo booth, and several conservation stations. The Mayor of Ogden was in court Wednesday morning fighting against a final protective order brought by his sister to prevent stalking. Mayor Robert Pence and his sister Karen Lundin were involved in several confrontations on July 11th which led up to Wednesday’s hearing. The conflict elevated until it turned physical at Mayor Pence’s residence. According to court testimony Pence told Lundin to exit his property, and after a brief verbal altercation wrestled Lundin to the ground. K-State women’s basketball will begin the new 18-game Big 12 schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 4, as the league office released the new double round robin slate. The Wildcats have also added another non-conference contest and a pair of exhibition games to finalize the 2011-12 schedule. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The official logo for the 2012 All-Star game has been unveiled. Next year’s game is at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, and the Royals were well-represented when the logo made its debut Tuesday. All-Star relievers Aaron Crow and Joakim Soria and manager Ned Yost all attended the unveiling. 21-year-old Veandre Siler is in fair condition after being involved in a motorcycle accident on Stagg Hill Tuesday evening. Siler had been transported by lifeflight to Stormont Vail after his motorcycle left the road after attempting to pass another motorcycle on his Suzuki GSX-R 600, and losing control. Siler sustained a head laceration, and an injured ankle, and RCPD reports that Siler was not wearing a helmet.
Junction City Police have arrested the person believed responsible for the burglary of the Waste Management Office located at 2300 Elmdale Ave which occurred on July 17th. 23 year old Pedro Montoya of 418 W. 18th in Junction City was taken into custody by Detectives at around 6:20 last (Tuesday) evening near his apartment and brought to the JCPD for questioning. He was then confined at the Geary County Jail on charges of Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property. His First Appearance in Geary County District Court was this (Wednesday) morning. Several area restaurants are facing Food Safety Violations. Five restaurants were leveled with critical violations; Colbert Hills, Ingredient, Mr. K’s Cafe, Denny’s, and the Sonic Drive-In in Wamego. Denny’s on Tuttle Creek Boulevard was leveled with the most violations at 10, the majority of which were corrected on site, though it was noted the thresh hold of the back door was worn down enough for pests to enter the kitchen. It’s budget time again and at Tuesday’s Wamego City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page threw out dates and times for the Work Session and Public Hearing for the 2012 City Budget. It was decided the Work Session will be Monday, August 15th at 4:30 p.m. , with the Public Hearing set at 6 p.m. , also on the 15th.
