Manhattan Regional Airport officials are making quite the impression on prospective new airlines. Lyle Butler, President and CEO of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, says additional airlines would help with some possible flight problems. “It would give us that cover that, should an airline change it’s schedule or go elsewhere, you’ve got another airline to work with,” Butler told Riley County Commissioners Thursday. “I think that only benefits us.” Butler says Airport Director Peter Van Kuren has approached airlines about potential flights going west. Manhattan had numerous projects last month as far as construction. Manhattan Building official, Brad Claussen, tells KMAN, compared to the rest of Kansas, Manhattan’s construction numbers are fairly high. According to Claussen, Manhattan pulled in a little over $4 million in construction dollars. He reports January the start of 21 new residential units, including a 12-plex and nine single family dwellings. Among the noted projects Claussen mentioned was the completion of the Westloop renovations to Dillions and the start of re-construction on the Strasser Village apartment complex, which was destroyed by arson on Nov. 6, 2011. A construction project aimed at easing congestion at Hayes Drive and Casement Road is slated to begin Monday. The project will add turn lanes on the Casement Road and a turn lane for north-bound Hayes Drive. Traffic will be maintained throughout the work zone, but delays and decreased lane widths should be expected. Construction should be completed by Spring of 2012.

The fourth annual Early Expressions Art Gala was hosted at the Beach Museum on the Kansas State University campus this weekend. On Saturday, there was a public reception where the students, their parents and supporters of art were able to view the pieces on display and also to bid on art during the silent auction. 21st district magistrate Judge William Malcolm ruled on Friday afternoon that 19 year old Micheal Blake Layne will be tried for 1st degree murder. Layne’s preliminary hearing on Friday included testimony from 18 year old Reyna Youdath who told the court her side of the story on the events that unfolded on and around the 6th and 7th of December 2011. Other testimony included several detectives on their involvement with the investigation, and the evidence brought forward from their efforts. Youdath has agreed to testify for the prosecution and received a plea agreement that would reduce her sentence for involvement in those…
A native Manhattan woman may not have won on Wheel of Fortune Thursday night, but she had a surprise of a different nature. Maryanne Rigor’s military husband surprised her at the end of the episode. Major Rigor came back from Afghanistan , with his unit’s homecoming ceremony held the same day his wife filmed her episode. Major Rigor was hidden in a back room until the very end of the program–with the two embracing as the show ended. Maryanne won 14-thousand dollars and a trip to Las Vegas, but was not the final winner in the Thursday night program.
A 14 year old from Manhattan has been arrested on multiple battery charges, and criminal damage to property. At around 6:00 pm on Thursday night Riley county police were called to the 1100 block of Crossgate Terrace on a report of battery and criminal damage to property. According to police reports upon arrival at the scene the police officers made contact with the youth, Jonathan Dickson, and at that point Officer Joshua Opat was allegedly assaulted by the suspect.
