KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Royals have purchased the contract of right-hander Roman Colon from Triple-A Omaha and optioned first baseman Clint Robinson to the same club. Kansas City also shifted left-hander Danny Duffy, who had Tommy John surgery this week, to the 60-day disabled list before Thursday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Royals brought Robinson up from Omaha to provide an extra bat when they play in National League parks, something they’ll do again this weekend in St. Louis. Fort Riley celebrated the 95th birthday of the 1st Infantry Division, the 237th Birthday of the United States Army, and the end of a week-long celebration for the soldiers and families of the Big Red One. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas health officials are warning residents to avoid direct contact with water in two lakes because of high levels of blue-green algae blooms. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued the warnings Thursday for Memorial-Veterans Lake in Great Bend and Old Herington City Lake in Dickinson County. The agency also issued health advisories for seven lakes where blue-green algae have been detected. Advisories mean boating and fishing may be safe, but direct contact with the water is discouraged for people, pets and livestock. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas will ask for $30 million in state funds to help erect a new medical education building. The university says the building will cost an estimated $75 million. It will be built at the University of Kansas School of Medicine campus in Kansas City, Kan. A judge ruled Wednesday that Billy Frank Davis Jr. will be bound over for trial in the March death of Ahliyah Nachelle Irvin, who was taken from her apartment in March and later found dead in a clothes dryer. The office of House Minority Leader Paul Davis, of Lawrence, wasn’t more specific before a Thursday morning news conference at the Statehouse. Typically, under Kansas law, an objection is filed with the secretary of state’s office, challenging an individual candidate’s right to be on the ballot.
