Named to several preseason award watch lists, K-State senior linebacker Arthur Brown received his first preseason all-America honor on Monday.  CBS Sports.com put Brown on its second team.  He was the first Wildcat in five years with triple digit tackles with 101 a year ago including nine and a half stops for loss, and also had a key interception against Baylor.  Brown was named the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year.  He also was named preseason all-Big 12, and to the watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik, Lombardi, Butkis, Bronko Nagurski, and Walter Camp awards. TAMPA, Fla. (AP)   Police say a former Fort Hays State and current Tennessee Titans player has died of an apparent suicide.  Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says officers found 25-year-old O.J. Murdock inside his car Monday morning with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.  The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school.  He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)   Former Kansas all-American Jacque Vaughn says he’s humbled and excited to become the Magic’s next head coach.  The 37-year-old takes over the team with the status of star center Dwight Howard uncertain.  Howard has asked to be traded and made it clear he doesn’t want to remain with the Magic.  Vaughn takes over for Stan Van Gundy, who was fired in May.  He has no head coaching experience, but has served as an assistant coach with San Antonio.

The West continued their dominance over the East in the 39th Kansas Shrine Bowl with 14-7 victory in Emporia, their 6th straight in the series.  A number of area athletes shined including Manhattan High grad and future K-State Wildcat wideout Deante Burton. He had 108 total yards for the West squad on rushing, receiving, and returns, and even threw a pass, althought it was intercepted.   Lining up at wide receiver for the East was Rock Creek’s Logan Miner, who will walk on at K-State.  He caught six passes for 60 yards. The sun was barely reaching over the horizon on Tuesday morning as American flags and well wishers gathered on Pierre street on the eastern side of town to send off some local heroes on the first leg of their trip to Washington D.C. as part of the Honor Flight Program. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A new government report is putting some grim numbers to the status of major crops across Kansas. In its weekly crop condition report, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday that 66 percent of the corn crop is in poor to very poor condition. Twenty-four percent is in fair condition, with 9 percent rated good and only 1 percent rated in excellent condition. About 2 percent of the corn acreage has been harvested for grain, in the earliest start to the corn harvest in Kansas history. Other major Kansas crops are not faring much better, with many stands…

IOLA, Kan. (AP) A bull rider who suffered fatal injuries at a rodeo in southeastern Kansas has been identified as a 22-year-old Missouri man. The Iola Register reports that Justin Jeffries died at a hospital after being bucked by a 1,700-pound bull Saturday at the Allen County Fair Rodeo. Jeffries was a resident of the west-central Missouri town of Cole Camp. Authorities said Jeffries was wearing a vest and helmet when he was thrown just after leaving the gate to attempt an 8-second ride. The bull’s hind hooves hit Jeffries in the chest and abdomen.
