Rock Creek came within an eyelash of winning the 3A state softball tournament over the weekend, bowing out in a 13-inning title game loss to Hillsboro.  Six Mustangs earned all-Mid-East League honors, including a trio on the first team, Bailey Elliott, Katie Hodges and Megan Srna.  Plus, Caitline’ Christenson, Kelsey Quinn, and Jessi Snapp made the second team. Riley County also had two all-Mid East League selections, Rachel Rheaume  on the first team and Heidi Prockish on the second team.

The Manhattan High softball team placed four players on the all-Centennial League teams announced on Monday.  Junior outfielder Kori Bridegam received first team honors after leading the Indians with a .473 batting average, and a .519 on base percentage.  A trio of MHS girls were named to the all-Centennial League second team, senior designated player Kaitlyn Motley, junior Jenna Stigge at second base, and sophomore pitcher Aubrey Jung.

The Rock Creek boys completed a special year with a 3A state baseball tournament appearance over the weekend.  The Mustangs made it to the final four of 3A in both football and basketball as well.  Rock Creek put four players on the all-Mid-East League first team announced on Monday.  Shane Adams, Ryan Harshbarger, Brandon Lutgen, and Josh Srna all received first team honors, while Eric Willard also made honorable mention. Riley County had three representatives on the all-Mid-East League squad, Bret Shoemaker and Collin Wood made the first team, while Jordan Lindstrom received honorable mention.

CLEVELAND (AP)   Jose Lopez had three RBIs and Jason Kipnis drove in two runs to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 Monday.  Josh Tomlin (2-2) gave up four runs and four hits in five innings as Cleveland broke a three-game losing streak. The right-hander had not pitched since May 7 due to right wrist tendinitis.  Kipnis had a two-run single in a five-run third inning off Nathan Adcock (0-3) as the first-place Indians maintained a half-game lead in the AL Central over the Chicago White Sox.  They had lost three in a row at Chicago…

On Monday the third annual Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery Memorial Day service  took place on a sunlit hill crowded with guests bearing witness to the ceremony.  The Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery’s motto is “No one is ever buried alone, all are buried with honor”, and on Monday those that gave the ultimate sacrifice were honored as family and friends from all over the country gathered to commemorate their service. Kurt Loupe of Manhattan said the day was special to him.  Loupe lost his brother in Vietnam, and appreciated all of those who turned out to remember the fallen.  Retired Colonel Micheal M. BALTIMORE (AP)   Jeff Francoeur and Billy Butler hit home runs, and Alcides Escobar had two hits to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 on Sunday. Francoeur had a terrific series, hitting 7 for 12 against the Orioles, including two homers. Butler had home runs in successive games for the Royals, who won two consecutive games for the first time since a four-game winning streak from May 12-15. INDIANAPOLIS (AP)   Dario Franchitti won the Indianapolis for the third time, taking advantage when Takuma Sato crashed on the final lap. The Japanese driver went for the lead going into the first turn, pulled even with Franchitti but got too low, and it sent him into the outside wall. Sato’s car barely missed Franchitti, who coasted across the line under a yellow caution flag to become the 10th driver to win at least three Indy 500s.
