Charges have officially been filed against a Salina man involved in a three county chase the end of last week–and those charges are somewhat different than what was originally listed. 55 year old Robert Smith faces charges of attempted second degree homicide, possession of methamphetamine, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery and various other assault, fleeing and eluding, and crimiinal damage charges. Smith’s first appearance in Pottawatomie county Court is set for 2:30 today (Tuesday). Riley County Police have arrested Garrett Goetz, 24, of Manhattan following an incident at the intersection of Kimball and Browning Avenues Saturday evening which saw him get into a confrontation with Officer Julia Goggins. Goetz allegedly shot Goggins with a Crossman pellet gun after she tried to remove Goetz from the intersection as he attempted to direct traffic following the K-State/Missouri football game. RCPD Captain Kurt Molrup says Goetz went into his residence near the intersection, where he proceeded to shoot the pellet gun at Goggins after pumping the gun several times. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)   TCU accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 on Monday night, seizing an opportunity to be a part of a conference with natural geographic rivals despite the league’s recent instability. A Missouri move to the SEC could generate as much as $12 million more in annual TV revenue, according to a document obtained by The Associated Press.  Missouri curators voted unanimously last week to give Chancellor Brady Deaton authority to explore options to leave the Big 12.  The curators reviewed the 45-page document that outlines the pros and cons of leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)   Former K-State assistant Mike Stoops has been fired halfway through his eighth season as head coach at Arizona.  Athletic director Greg Byrne announced Stoops’ dismissal at a news conference Monday evening, two days after the Wildcats lost their fifth straight game, 37-27 at previously winless Oregon State. Dating to last season, Arizona has lost 10 of 11 games, the lone victory this season’s opener over Northern Arizona, a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school.  Stoops had a 41-50 record with the Wildcats. (AP) Three Kansas organizations will share nearly $275,000 to support production of locally grown fruits and vegetables, The funds come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant program, with the awards being made by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The largest share about $172,000 goes to the Kansas Rural Center for a project that will provide technical help to local producers and buyers. Organizations throughout Kansas will be involved. (AP) Kansas is contesting a move by Dodge City Family Planning Clinic to join a challenge by Planned Parenthood to a new state law that stripped federal family planning money from both groups. The state argued in a filing Monday that the two entities have different interests. Kansas contends that the lawsuit by Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri seeks to protect its interest to provide abortion, advocate for abortion and associate with abortion providers on First Amendment grounds. WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) Investigators looking into the two-year-old disappearance of a south-central Kansas man are hoping for a break with the discovery of human remains in Oklahoma. Seventy-seven-year-old Winfield resident Richard May vanished in December 2009 after leaving the home of a friend in Pawhuska, Okla., for the 55-mile drive home. Ranch hands found May’s minivan three months later in Oklahoma’s Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, near Pawhuska. KAKE-TV reports that two ranchers recently found human remains while driving across the preserve. LYNDON, Kan. (AP) A Kansas judge is set to decide formal sentencing for a Columbia, Mo., city official convicted in the fatal shootings of four family members in 2009. A jury has already recommended that 48-year-old James Kraig Kahler be sentenced to death. District Judge Phillip Fromme can instead sentence him to life in prison without parole. The victims were 44-year-old Karen Kahler, her grandmother 89-year-old grandmother Dorothy Wight, and the Kahlers’ two daughters, 18-year-old Emily and 16-year-old Emily.
