TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas emergency management officials are urging residents to prepare for an invasion of zombies as part of a national disaster readiness campaign. October is Zombie Preparedness Month, a tongue-in-cheek campaign to get people nationwide to prepare for any type of disaster including attacks by killer zombies. The point is to get people to take an all-hazards approach to preparing themselves for things like tornadoes, floods and terrorist attacks. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management says if people are prepared for zombie attacks, they’re ready for anything. Several Topeka events are scheduled as part of the awareness effort,…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Readers who prefer e-books from Kansas libraries might be out of luck for a few weeks. A contract dispute between the state library and its provider of e-books is likely to cause public libraries to stop checking out e-books until a new contract is in place. The Wichita Eagle reports the state’s provider of e-books, Overdrive, is proposing a 700 percent price increase over three years. It also wants the state to relinquish ownership of the e-books it bought for statewide use. The state interprets the current contract to mean it owns the e-books, rather than having…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A debate over whether state lawmakers could use campaign funds to buy water coolers for their offices has been settled. During the last session, legislators said tax dollars can’t be used for the water coolers. That meant the only water fountains in the six-floor Statehouse were on the first two floors. But Sen. Dick Kelsey of Goddard decided that he wanted to be able to offer visitors to his office a drink of water. He asked all 165 legislators to pay $65 each to provide the water fountains. He also requested an opinion from the ethics commission…

The Big 12 Conference says school leaders have agreed to equally share first- and second-tier television money if its members agree to give the league their TV rights for at least six years. Neinas says he plans to visit with Missouri officials this week to state the league’s case for staying put, but not before the school’s curators meet Tuesday. The revenue-sharing model had been proposed…
