Riley County police received a report of a possible theft on Thursday. 55-year old Kathleen Cushman of 1021 Colorado told RCPD that she lost three items – a diamond engagement ring, a turquoise ring and a garnett ring – for a total loss of $1,900. An RCPD representative did say that Cushman was unsure as to whether she had lost the rings inside her home or if they had been stolen. The incident is believed to have occurred between January 1 and September 26 of this year. The case is under further investigation.

One of the two remaining Riley County health department administrator candidates had a day of interviewing and getting acquainted… although this particular candidate is already pretty well acquainted with county officials. Susanne Kufahl, who currently serves as assistant administrator of what is now the Riley County/Manhattan health department, says she brings a lot of interest, enthusiasm, and experience, having served as assistant administrator for 14 and a half years. There was a life before the Riley County/Manhattan health department for Kufahl, however, serving in a rural health clinic where she did a variety of work. She has a masters degree in speech…
HUGOTON, Kan. (AP) The U.S. Department of Energy says it has finalized a $132.4 million loan guarantee to a company that plans to convert crop residues into ethanol in southwest Kansas. Abengoa Bioengergy Biomass of Kansas is developing a commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in Hugoton, about 70 miles southwest of Garden City. The company estimates the project will create about 300 construction jobs and 65 permanent positions. The DOE says the project will convert roughly 300,000 tons of agricultural crop residues, including corn stalks and leaves, into 23 million gallons of ethanol per year. Energy Secretary Steven Chu says the…
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A cattle drive down Main Street through downtown Wichita will be reminiscent of the state’s cattle heritage as Kansas celebrates its 150th birthday. Kansas Livestock Association will drive 30 of the trophy longhorn steers as part of the Kansas Sunflower Parade on Oct. 8. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback plans to be on horseback ahead of the herd. Several KLA members will be among the outriders driving the longhorns in the parade, and a trail-drive era wagon will follow the cattle. The longhorns come from a ranch in Woodward, Okla. The cattle have led large parades in Cheyenne,…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is launching a new “Walk of Honor” at its Statehouse, and the first honoree is former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. Dole, now 88, was expected to attend Friday’s ceremony in Topeka, along with his wife, Elizabeth, a former senator from North Carolina. A panel of Kansas historians recently named Dole as one of the state’s 25 most notable figures as part of Kansas’ ongoing celebration of the 150th anniversary of its statehood. Dole, a Russell native, served more than 35 years in Congress and was the 1996 Republican presidential nominee. Plans call for the…

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) Sentencing is scheduled for November for a Missouri woman convicted of bringing heroin and cocaine to the Lansing Correctional Facility. The Leavenworth Times reports that Donna Garner of Kansas City was found guilty Tuesday of three drug charges, including possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine and trafficking contraband in a correctional facility. County Attorney Todd Thompson said the charges stemmed from Garner’s visit in November 2009 to the prison, where her husband was incarcerated. He said Garner was accused of throwing the drugs into a trash can at the prison. Garner is scheduled to be…
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) A 42-year-old Olathe woman has been charged with driving while intoxicated after police said she crashed her car in her daughter’s school parking lot. Kelly R. Dixon of Olathe was planning to pick up her daughter from a Kansas City school before she reportedly crashed into the school’s stop sign swing arm Wednesday. Jackson County prosecutors on Thursday charged her with DWI as an aggravated offender. Online court records don’t list a lawyer for Dixon. The Kansas City Star reports that in 1996, Dixon’s 23-month-old son was killed when she crashed into a tree. Dixon’s blood alcohol…
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Several Kansas faith, labor and community groups gathered in Wichita to mobilize opposition to an effort to move up the start date for new Kansas voter identification laws. Participants oppose a push by Secretary of State Kris Kobach to require people who are voting for the first time to show proof of citizenship starting in March, rather than in January 2013 as the law now requires. The Wichita Eagle reports that the group says starting the requirement in March could keep thousands from participating in the 2012 elections. They said people who don’t have driver’s licenses or…
BELOIT, Kan. (AP) A misunderstanding over a required waiting period has delayed the start of a 0.3 percent sales tax in Beloit. City voters approved the sales tax in June. The tax would bump the total sales tax in the city from 8 percent to 8.3 percent — to pay for a new pool, estimated to cost about $3.9 million. Plans were to begin collecting the tax Oct. 1, which is Saturday. But The Salina Journal reports that the Kansas Department of Revenue has told officials that a 90-day waiting period is required after the city passes an ordinance to…
