KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   The Kansas City Royals have signed outfielder Jeff Francoeur for another two years.   The club announced Thursday that Francoeur had signed a two-year contract extension through 2013.  He’s hitting .277 in his first year with the Royals, with 15 home runs, 66 RBIs and a career-high 19 stolen bases.  The affable veteran has also been a clubhouse leader and mentor for the Royals, who are the youngest team in the major leagues.  He’s also third in the majors with 12 outfield assists.  Francoeur signed a one-year contract with the Royals last Dec. 15.

ARCADIA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback says he’s confident that the arts in Kansas will be funded despite the announcement that the state won’t get federal matching grants because Brownback vetoed state arts funding. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Brownback said Wednesday that private money is being raised for the arts in Kansas, but he says the fundraising will take some time. Brownback also said he wished the National Endowment for the Arts had given Kansas more time and worked with the state. YODER, Kan. (AP) A Yoder man has died after the tractor he was driving was hit from behind by a pickup truck. The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says Eli Borntrager, 67, died Thursday from injuries he suffered when he was thrown from the tractor Wednesday near Yoder. The sheriff’s department says a truck driver who thought the tractor was coming toward him ran into the rear of the tractor.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Shawnee County jury convicted a man from Ohio of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend to death in Topeka. William D. Holt II, 26, of Sylvania, Ohio, was convicted Thursday of premeditated first-degree murder in the September 2010, shooting death of Mitch Vose, 32. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that prosecutors say Holt drove from Ohio to Topeka specifically to kill Vose. District Court Judge Dave Debenham will sentence Holt on Nov. 4.

July unemployment numbers are in for Kansas, and the Manhattan is up from June, though still down from a year ago. Numbers released today by the Kansas Department of Labor show Manhattan’s unemployment rate for July at 4.5 percent, up from four point two in June. A year ago the unemployment rate was 5.4 percent. Riley County was up at 4.8 percent, compared to 4.6 in June. Pottawatomie County’s unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a percent to 5.1 percent last month. Geary County jumped from 7.9 to 8.2 percent.

One of the two men arrested Wednesday for the murder of Kevin Cockrum has been released and no charges will be pursued. According to Riley County Police Officials, the investigation into the beating death of Cockrum, who died from his injuries a week ago today, revealed insufficient evidence to continue to hold  Levertis Lee Horne, 20, of 513 North 16th Street #2. Horne had been charged with aiding a second degree murder and has been released from custody. The Riley County Commission approved a sales tax program proposal Thursday.  New endeavors would include 12 bridges, three major reconstruction projects, and 12 overlay projects to be completed over the next 10 years. If approved, public works director Leon Hobson estimates the projects will cost $20 million. The proposal will be on the ballot in 2012. The tax extension must be approved by voters. — At the request of a citizen, county counselor Clancy Holeman investigated county boundary issue. A Salina man says he wants everyone to know that he’s alive and well and has not been in a plane crash. Fred Leepers says he was wrongly identified as the pilot of an experimental ultralight aircraft that crashed August 6th in Butler County. He says friends and family have been contacting him since then expressing concern. The actual pilot was Miles Frederick Leeper, a 43-year-old Douglass resident.
