KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Kansas City, Kan., police say a man died early Thursday after crashing his car into a building while fleeing from police. Police say the chase began when they tried to stop a man who was speeding. When the driver, who was in his 20s, swerved to miss stop sticks, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a building. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The man’s identity was not released. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) A student journalist is suing Johnson County Community College over the price it charged for public documents. Twenty-one-year-old Marcus Clem of Stilwell says in the lawsuit that the college was trying to stall release of emails by charging the student newspaper $47,426 for seven months of emails. The Kansas City Star reports that the emails involve a former college employee who was fired and the employee’s supervisor. ST. LOUIS (AP) Missouri is hoping to join the Southeastern Conference but would have preferred an offer from the Big Ten that never came, a university official said Wednesday. Missouri hoped to join the Big Ten last year but the league instead chose Nebraska. The university official said the Big Ten remains Missouri’s top choice but that conference “has no interest.” “That’s what’s left,” the official said, referring to the SEC. State Sen. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Board of Regents Chairman Ed McKechnie says the Big 12 remains the best fit for Kansas and Kansas State, regardless of whether Missouri is looking at other conferences. McKechnie said Wednesday he’s disappointed in Missouri’s decision and believes it’s not in the best interests of academics or student athletes. He also says Kansas and Kansas State have options, but the Big 12 is the best option at this time.
Without starting setter Caitlyn Donahue, the K-State volleyball team battled #16 Iowa State, but fell 27-25, 25-21, and 25-23 to the Cyclones. Backup setter Ashley Kelican made her first career start, and contributed 31 assists and 8 digs. Lilla Porubek led the offense with 11 kills, and Kathleen Ludwig added 10. With the loss, K-State drops to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12. The Cats will play at Texas Tech this Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. K-State’s Brittany Chambers and Jalana Childs have been named to the 2011-12 preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention. Chambers and Childs are the first Wildcat teammates to earn preseason honors since Kendra Wecker, Laurie Koehn and Megan Mahoney were named to the 2004-05 preseason All-Big 12 team. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Green Bay has become home for Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson, and it will be for at least another three seasons. The former Riley County and K-State standout confirmed Wednesday that he has signed a contract extension that will keep him on the team through the 2014 season. According to ESPN, the deal is worth $13.35 million. Nelson, a second-round pick out of K-State in 2008, began to blossom toward the end of last season and caught nine passes for 140 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl. There was a lot of information and discussion that took place during the Manhattan Odgen school board. The board started off the night with the reports. This portion consisted talk of the enrollment report, the overtime report and the summer program report. Carol Adams, executive director of teaching and learning, and Pam Russell, director of special education, gave a small presentation detailing the STEM program that occurred this past summer. The Konza Prairie Biological Station , or KPBS, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The long term research facility encompasses over 8,500 acres, and houses many long term research projects. Director of the KPBS and Professor of Biology at Kansas State University John Briggs says that one of the research projects concerning the importance of fire in prairie systems has been conducted for the past 40 years. Briggs explains that without occasional burnings the prairie would revert to woodland scrub, and drastically change the ecosystem currently in place. CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) Apple Inc. said the company’s co-founder Steve Jobs died Wednesday. He was 56. “We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” the company said in a brief statement. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.” Steve Jobs has died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
