A bizarre early morning break-in led to a Manhattan man under psychiatric care early Tuesday. According to Riley County police Lt. Josh Kyle, RCPD received a call just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday regarding an attempted break-in. Officers responded to the source of the call, but later discovered the suspect coated in blood screaming out suicidal comments near the intersection of University and Claflin. The 21-year old man was eventually tasered and taken into police custody. It’s every Kansan’s nightmare; a surprise tornado ripping through town in the dark of night. That’s exactly what happened to the Wabaunsee county community of Harveyville Tuesday night. After the EF-2 tornado destoryed 40 percent of the town, Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen received a call from Wabaunsee County asking for any assistance they could give. “For the next two days, we’re going to have six people on at a time in three different shifts of eight hours apiece,” Schoen told KMAN. “Just to help them get a handle on things, begin the recovery process, and ensure public safety.”…
GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) Attorneys for the Kansas man accused of killing a 14-year-old Great Bend girl are seeking to close a pretrial proceeding during arguments over several motions. Thirty-eight-year-old Adam Longoria faces trial March 26 on charges of capital murder and other offenses. The Great Bend man is accused of killing Alicia DeBolt, whose charred body was found in August 2010 at the asphalt plant where he worked. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Senators are asking that the House leadership avoid temptation to make adjustments in any map that redraws Kansas Senate districts. Senate Reapportionment Committee Chairman Tim Owens says Wednesday that the House should honor what has been legislative tradition that each chamber accepts the map from the other without making changes. However, House Speaker Mike O’Neal has said that if the Senate map doesn’t have strong support when it comes to the House, he would consider making adjustments to get a map that more senators could accept. OSWEGO, Kan. (AP) Strong winds have injured three people, damaged homes and toppled utility poles in southeast Kansas’ Labette County. Labette County Emergency Management Director Larry Steeby said Wednesday that the injured were inside a house when the storm struck. The Joplin Globe reported that one person had serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Steeby says 10 to 12 houses, including some mobile homes, were damaged. The most serious damage occurred about three miles north of Altamont and three miles south of Parsons. As of mid-morning, Westar Energy was reporting that more than 2,000 customers were without power.
PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) Strong wind gusts have damaged a Pittsburg hotel so badly it had to be evacuated, knocked out power to the city’s hospital and closed its schools. The Joplin Globe reported that wind gust of up to 70 mph were recorded late Tuesday night, causing roof damage and traffic-snarling power outages. Because of roof damage to Pittsburg’s Econo Lodge, 25 guests were taken to another hotel. After losing power, Pittsburg’s Via Christi Hospital began operating on its generator system.
