MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) Organizers say construction of the new Flint Hills Discovery Center is on schedule and under budget. Bob Workman, director of the center, told The Topeka Capital-Journal that the $24.5 million, 35,000-square-foot building is expected to be finished by early November, and the discovery center will be opened to visitors in April. HAYS, Kan. (AP) Federal funding issues have delayed repairs to the main runway at Hays Regional Airport. Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty told The Hays Daily News the runway project has been put on hold for about a month. The U.S. Senate recently approved a six-week re-authorization of the Federal Aviation Administration, but more funding issues could surface when Congress returns to Washington in the fall. Projected FAA funding for the engineering design phase of the runway rehabilitation is $350,706, or 95% of the total cost.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A 30-year-old man has drowned at a lake in northeast Kansas. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the victim’s name won’t be released until relatives are notified. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that the man drowned Saturday morning in Lone Star Lake, which is located 16 miles southwest of Lawrence. Douglas County sheriffs Sgt. Steve Lewis said witnesses reported a man was swimming with his friends about 75 feet off shore when he went underwater and didn’t resurface. Riley County Police officials have located the vehicle in the surveillance footage released late last week, but are refusing to state whether it’s connected to Manhattan’s latest murder investigation. The RCPD made the announcement yesterday they have located the white vehicle from the security cameras in Aggieville from around the time that 31-year-old Kevin Cockrum was beaten to death in an alley in the 1000 block of Moro. From the beginning of the investigation, detectives have been trying to locate a white Lexus-type car with three men inside that was seen speeding away near the scene of the crime. A…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Former Royals pitcher Kyle Davies says he is embarrassed by his arrest for disorderly intoxication on the day before he was released. The 27-year-old Davies told The Kansas City Star that he “made a foolish mistake.” The booking report shows the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department in suburban Tampa, Fla., arrested Davies early Tuesday on the misdemeanor charge. He was released on $100 cash bond. The next day, the Royals asked for release waivers on Davies to clear space on their roster for catcher Salvador Perez. KMAN has learned a 31-year-old Manhattan man found severely beaten near Aggieville late Thursday night has died from his injuries. RCPD Lt. Richard Fink said Kevin Cockrum succumbed to his injuries around 8:40 a.m. Friday and was pronounced dead at Via Christi Health in Wichita. Cockrum was found near the north side of the 1000 block of Moro Street unconcious. He was first taken to Mercy Regional Health Center with what police described as life-threatening head injuries, then flown to Wichita. According to sources, the Texas A&M board of regents will meet in a previously scheduled meeting on August 22nd to discuss and possibly vote on moving to the SEC as early as 2012.
