Riley County Police arrested three Manhattan residents Wednesday on drug charges. RCPD reports show Mercedes Lewis, 23, and Daniel Munford, 29, both of 1104 Garden Way, Apartment B, were arrested for the manufacture of a controlled substance, as well as possession of a hallucinogenic and a multitude of other charges. Both were in Riley County Jail with bonds of $50,000. Additionally, 24-year-old Issac Price the Third of 907 Kearny #7, was arrested for the distribution of a hallucinogenic, among other charges. Price’s bond has been set at $10,000.

ABILENE, Kan. (AP) The Keystone oil pipeline is the focus of a panel discussion scheduled for next week in Abilene. The panel will feature Jim Prescott of TransCanada, the company planning to build the pipeline to move oil from Canadian tar sands through several states, including Kansas. David Daniel, a Texas landowner opposed to the pipeline, will also be on the panel. Supporters say the Keystone pipeline could significantly reduce U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Spirit AeroSystems and a union for some of its employees will resume negotiations next week with a federal mediator observing. The talks are scheduled to resume next Thursday. SPEEA, the union that represents 2,300 professional and technical employees, last month rejected the Wichita aircraft manufacturer’s contract offer and asked for the mediator. The Wichita Eagle reports that the mediator is only observing this round of talks, in case the negotiations do not go well. Union members said they rejected Spirit’s contract offer because it capped salary pools, offered no wage guarantees or cost-of-living increases, included lower bonuses…

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered that the State of Kansas fly flags at half-staff on Friday August 19th to honor a fallen soldier. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Bryan Nichols died on August 6th while serving his country in Afghanistan. CW2 Nichols was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment.  He was one of 30 Americans killed when their Chinook helicopter crashed after taking enemy fire. The Manhattan – Ogden school board had some major decisions to make during their meeting. The meeting started with a work session to go over the construction schedule for Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt Elementary.   Though progress is being made, classes will be starting a little later.  The board unanimously passed a motion to move the start date for Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt from Wednesday August 24 to Friday August 26 with a full day.  This was thought to be the best option and the safest for the students.  Discussion will continue with how the day and a…

Arrests have been made in the murder of Kevin Lynn Cockrum by the Riley County Police Department this afternoon  afternoon. 24 year old Justin Charles Taylor of 619 Vattier Street Manhattan Kansas has been charged with 2nd degree murder.  20 year old Levertis Lee Horne of 513 N. 16th Street was arrested and charged with aiding 2nd degree murder. Cockrum was found lying on the ground unconscious  on the 11th of August in an alley on the north side of the 1000 block of Moro Street.  Cockrum later sucumbed to his injuries after being flown to Via Christi Hospital in…

Convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro has told Yahoo! Sports he provided impermissible benefits to dozens of University of Miami athletes, most of whom were involved with the football program. Implicated in the report is K-State linebacker Arthur Brown and running back Bryce Brown.  The allegations come when Arthur Brown played two years at Miami before transferrring to K-State, and when Bryce Brown originally committed to Miami.  He later decommitted, signed with Tennessee, and eventually transferred to K-State.  Yahoo! The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe could soon give Texas A&M a deadline to decide if they will remain in the league or head to the SEC.  Beebe says the other nine members of the Big 12 deserve to know A&M’s intentions.  He says their decision cannot drag out, as it puts the conference in an “untenable position”, and there has to be a “very short time period for an institution to commit”. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)   Oklahoma State megabooster T. Boone Pickens believes the Big 12 will survive the latest conference realignment threat, and suggests that Texas A&M stay put instead of joining the Southeastern Conference.  Pickens called the idea of moving to the SEC “a big mistake for Texas A&M” because the Aggies would essentially be moving out of Texas.
