With a flair for the dramatic, the Frankfort boys basketball won their 14th straight game to bring home the 1A Division II state title thanks to a 62-53 double overtime victory against Otis-Bison on Saturday night in Hays. The Wildcats trailed by four at halftime, but took a lead in the second half before the Cougars hit a three pointer to force OT. 60 other teams are envious of the Rock Creek Mustangs as they ended the 3A state tournament in 4th place over the weekend in Hutchinson. The Mustangs fell in the third place game to Central Heights 61-49. The Vikings took it to Rock Creek in the first half as they led 34-14 at the break, but the Mustangs held a 35-27 edge in the final 16 minutes. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum was the winner of the Kansas GOP Caucuses on Saturday and was also the winner in the counties around Manhattan. Statewide, Santorum gained 51 percent of the vote easily outdistancing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney who had 21 percent of the vote. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich garnered 14 percent while Texas Congressman Ron Paul took 13 percent. In Riley County, Santorum received 276 votes to Romney’s 200. On Saturday, March 10, 2012, the Riley County Republican party hosted their Presidential Caucus at Anthony Middle school. The doors opened at 8:30 a.m. to allow people to register and then at 10, representatives of the candidates were allowed ten minutes to speak explaining the points their candidates were proposing during their campaign. In the stands, people had buttons, shirts, caps and signs to promote the candidate of their choice.
