The Manhattan-Ogden School Board gave final approval this week to authorize publication of its notice to exceed the revenue neutral rate for the 2023-24 budget. The total mill levy will be 60.095, a decrease of about a half mill compared to the previous fiscal year. The General Fund, set by the Kansas Legislature, remains at 20 mills, while the Capital Outlay remains at 8.0 mills. Mill decreases are also noted in the district’s supplemental general (local option budget) and bond and interests. A group of Big Ten presidents has begun discussing the possibility of adding more West Coast schools to the conference if the Pac-12 continues to crumble, two people familiar with the conversations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Oregon and Washington would be the primary targets if the conference decided to make a move, one of the people said. Corneal Johnson, 34, of Manhattan was arrested while in the 400 block of Fremont Street on August 2, 2023, around 7:35 PM. Johnson was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for 4 counts of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of a child <18. The crime was originally reported to RCPD on April 27, 2023. Johnson was issued a total bond of $50,000 and was confined at the time of this report.

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a domestic dispute Monday in the 7700 block of Junietta Road in Manhattan. A deputy reportedly arrived on scene and made contact with a man and woman. After making contact, the man fled into a wooded area and the woman was detained. Officials from multiple law enforcement agencies searched for the man but were unable to locate him. He was later identified and the woman released after questioning. Later investigation revealed a stolen truck and camper were found at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office says there is no danger to the public.…
During their Tuesday meeting, Manhattan City Commissioners unanimously approved a request to allow negotiations with Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, Inc. regarding their interest in taking over operations at the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter. Commissioner Wynn Butler emphasized this is not an actual agreement but rather approval of continuing negotiations. He said these negotiations are necessary to figure out some smaller details. City Manager Ron Fehr said there are multiple benefits of contracting out the city’s animal shelter, one of which likely being a decrease in costs. The Kansas Department of Transportation is resurfacing K-16 in Pottawotamie County starting Wednesday, conditions permitting. The project covers from the K-63 junction to K-99 in Blaine, for a total of 19 miles. The contractor, Dustrol Inc of Towanda, will begin at K-63 with the eastbound lane, and complete to K-99. Once finished, the contractor will return to K-63 and start the westbound lane. The roadway will be reduced to one lane while the work takes place.
