WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is getting more than $5 million in federal funds to improve truck and bus safety. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Anne S. Ferro made the announcement last week in Goddard. The grants include nearly $4 million for the Kansas Highway Patrol for a range of highway safety enforcement efforts, including safety audits of new truck and bus companies and inspections of commercial vehicles transporting hazardous materials. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Film Commission’s manager says rules for an income tax credit need to be rewritten to lure more film productions to the state. Peter Jasso says Kansas is losing out on big productions because other states are more generous. In Kansas, a production company can claim a tax credit equal to 30 percent of its in-state expenditures. Total credits are capped at $2 million a year. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police say they have no strong suspects in the shooting death of banker Tim McGuigan more than a month ago. The 61-year-old McGuigan was senior vice president of Kansas State Bank. He was found dead in his home on Sept. 7. Wichita Lt. Ken Landwehr says McGuigan did not fit the profile of a homicide victim. He says the bank executive had no criminal background and lived alone in a low-crime area. And friends tell The Wichita Eagle that McGuigan had no known enemies. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka police say officers shot and killed a man who came at them with a knife. The 44-year-old man was killed early Thursday at an apartment south of downtown Topeka. His name was not released. Police Lt. Steve Taylor said officers went to the apartment after getting a report of an assault in progress. Taylor says the two officers shot the man after he approached them with a knife. The two police officers weren’t injured. They are on administrative leave pending an investigation.
SALINA, Kan. (AP) A Salina hospital is closing its psychiatric residential treatment program in Ellsworth County. Saint Francis Community Services says a lack of referrals forced it to consolidate its operations in Saline and Ellsworth counties. The hospital’s lawyer, Kevin Carrico, says the programs will be consolidated within 60 days. He says in March the programs had 500 placements but by September less than 300 youth were screened for the programs. The agency has a total of 30 residents at its two facilities. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Kansas City, Kan., police say a man died early Thursday after crashing his car into a building while fleeing from police. Police say the chase began when they tried to stop a man who was speeding. When the driver, who was in his 20s, swerved to miss stop sticks, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a building. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The man’s identity was not released. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) A student journalist is suing Johnson County Community College over the price it charged for public documents. Twenty-one-year-old Marcus Clem of Stilwell says in the lawsuit that the college was trying to stall release of emails by charging the student newspaper $47,426 for seven months of emails. The Kansas City Star reports that the emails involve a former college employee who was fired and the employee’s supervisor. ST. LOUIS (AP) Missouri is hoping to join the Southeastern Conference but would have preferred an offer from the Big Ten that never came, a university official said Wednesday. Missouri hoped to join the Big Ten last year but the league instead chose Nebraska. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Board of Regents Chairman Ed McKechnie says the Big 12 remains the best fit for Kansas and Kansas State, regardless of whether Missouri is looking at other conferences. McKechnie said Wednesday he’s disappointed in Missouri’s decision and believes it’s not in the best interests of academics or student athletes. He also says Kansas and Kansas State have options, but the Big 12 is the best option at this time.
