A couple of men convicted in Geary county are up for public comment sessions and possible parole this month. 40-year-old Jason Turner was convicted in a 1991 case of first degree murder and kidnapping. 47-year-old Charles Young was convicted in 1984 on charges of terroristic threat, aggravated sodomy, rape, and aggravated kidnapping. Public comment sessions are set for September 15th at the Hays Public Library, September 19th at the Finney state office building in Wichita, September 20th at Kansas City’s City Hall, and September 21st at the Landon State office building in Topeka. A Fort Riley soldier has been killed after a standoff involving U.S. Marshals and local authorities at a hotel in Abilene. Sgt. Kirk Evenson was reported Absent Without Leave by military authorities Tuesday. When he failed to appear for the second day of his court-martial for Rape of a Child. Evenson was tried in absentia and on Wednesday he was convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Evenson’s vehicle was later spotted outside a local hotel in Abilene. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 individuals Wednesday who are believed to be responsible for at least 10 or more burglaries in the Olsburg, Westmoreland, Louisville, and Wamego area. Over the past several weeks, the Sheriff’s Office has taken multiple reports of burglaries and thefts to garages and vehicles. Items reported stolen were tools, fishing equipment,tackle boxes, boats, a trailer as well as other misc. items. A hearing was held at the Riley County Division III court today (Thursday) on motions from the defense for former Manhattan High School student Cole Drake. The 15 year old Drake is charged with 1st degree murder and aggravated burglary in the shooting death of 14-year-old Tyler Dowling in April. The motions today (on Thursday) were brought forward by defense attorney Brenda Jordan to suppress statements made at the Riley County Police Department headquarters on April 14th when Drake confessed to the crime. Gerg Harkrader, who admits there will be additional challenges this year with work on K-18. Downtown Manhattan Executive Director Gina Scroggs indicates everything is going great. She says a brand new line-up of entertainment on the stage is planned. Downtown streets, by the way, will be closed beginning at two this (Thursday) afternoon. Events begin at six in the evening both days. Scroggs says the event continues to grow, with 80-plus vendors this year compared to 50 in the past.
HOUSTON (AP) Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne is speaking out after his school’s decision to leave the Big 12. In a blog posted Wednesday, Byrne says the departures of Nebraska and Colorado and the creation of the Longhorn Network at rival Texas made the Big 12 “considerably different” than it was last summer — when he said the Aggies should remain in the league.
