LYNDON, Kan. (AP) Osage County residents are paying higher taxes because of the upcoming capital murder trial for defendant James Kraig Kahler. Tiny Osage County, population 16,386, will pay more than $200,000 to stage Kahler’s trial, which begins Monday. County Commissioner Ken Kuykendall told The Topeka Capital-Journal that the $200,000 is specifically for the trial. Another $60,000 was spent on upgrading the courtroom where the trial will take place. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A Douglas County judge has denied a rural Lawrence man’s request for a new trial after the man was convicted of molesting a 4-year-old girl. The Lawrence Journal World reports that attorneys for 69-year-old Richard Gonzalez alleged Friday that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation tested swabs taken from the girl’s body after the January verdict and determined Gonzalez’s DNA was not found on the swabs. Gonzalez was convicted in January of sexually abusing the girl at a rural Lawrence day care center. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Prosecutors said the defense had…
A Manhattan teenager has died from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident Friday night in the 2400 block of Marlatt Avenue. According to Riley County Police, the vehicle driven by Brett Bolton left the roadway and rolled. Police say bystanders pulled Bolton from the vehicle shortly before it was engulfed in flames. He was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center and then transported to Via Christi in Wichita, where Bolton passed at 8:30 Saturday morning. There were no passengers in the vehicle. One person was life-flighted to a Wichita hospital after a major rollover on Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan. Riley County police say the accident happened around 11 Friday night in the 2400-block of Marlatt. Police say one vehicle was involved. There is no official word on the victim’s condition.

This morning’s precipitation could give farmers something to smile about once crops are cut. Greg McClure, Riley County Extension Agriculture Agent, says the rain might suffice for soybean production. McClure adds that the recent heat did not disturb al l of the crops entirely. “Grain sorghum crop can really hold on well,” McClure says. “It can handle heat and it actually likes heat.” Crops aren’t the only thing on his mind. Ogden citizens interested in letting their kids get some exercise have two opportunities coming up this fall. The city Parks and Recreation department is hosting sign-ups for both flag football and soccer leagues. “Sign-ups began on August 1st and continue until the 31st,” Mariah Boller, Ogden Community Center Director and Parks and Recreation Director says. “Registration is $25 per player and there is also a $25 uniform deposit” Coaches are also needed for both sports. NEW YORK (AP) Michael Beasley shoved a heckler in the face with his hand during a playground game. In the second half of a summer league game at Dyckman Park in Washington Heights, Beasley was jawing back and forth with a fan who was getting on his case. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Alex Gordon matched his career-high with four hits and Yamaico Navarro drove in three runs to the lead the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 on Thursday night. The Royals sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run sixth inning to break open the game. The inning included eight hits with Navarro doubling home two runs and Chris Getz stroking a two-run single. .KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have purchased the contract of Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha. The club announced the move after Thursday night’s 9-4 win over the Orioles. Giavotella, a second-round pick in 2008 out of the University of New Orleans, hit .398 in June and .383 in July in the Pacific Coast League. His season totals with Omaha include a .338 average with nine home runs, 33 doubles, two triples, 73 RBIs and a .479 slugging percentage.
