Football game day isn’t far away now, and the city of Manhattan has issued a reminder of game day parking ordinances. City officials indicate the ordinances are to improve safety and allow for better emergency access during Kansas State home football game days. Parking is restricted and or prohibited and tow zones are established along several streets near the stadium. A complete listing can be viewed on the city’s website at www.manhattan.ks.us. Riley County police received a report of three missing dogs over the weekend, two of which are now dead. Three blueheeler dogs left their owner’s property in Leonardville over the weekend. One was found beaten to death, another with a broken back and hind legs (which ultimately died), while the third remains missing. RCPD announced that there are no suspects at this time. The case remains under investigation. HOUSTON (AP)   Texas A&M has told the Big 12 Conference it plans to leave the league by July 2012 if it is accepted by another conference.  The move, which had been expected, may set off another round of conference realignment in college sports.  The Aggies have made it clear they want to join the 12-member Southeastern Conference.  University President R. Bowen Loftin notified the Big 12 in a letter and said it departing the Big 12 “is in the best interest of Texas A&M.”  He said he hopes the move can be amicable and presumably hopes to negotiate a…

Kaitlynn Pelger notched a career high 24 kills as K-State pulled out a five set victory over Creighton on Tuesday night in front of nearly 3,000 fans at Ahearn Fieldhouse.  The Cats prevailed, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, and 15-13, scoring the final four points of the match to win.  Pelger was one block away from K-State’s first triple-double in seven years, she had 13 digs and 9 blocks.  Lilla Porubek added 15 kills.  Sophomore Courtney Traxson got her first start of the year, and registered 7 kills. CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) The NCAA says eight Miami players must sit out games and repay benefits in order to play for the Hurricanes again. Starting quarterback Jacory Harris and four other players will sit out one game and make repayment.  Defensive lineman Olivier Vernon must miss six games and repay $1,200.   Defensive back Ray Ray Armstrong and tight end Dyron Dye will sit out four games.  Defensive linemen Marcus Forston and Adewale Ojomo, linebacker Sean Spence, and wide receiver Travis Benjamin will sit out one game and make repayment. DETROIT (AP)   Ramon Santiago hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.  Santiago, who entered the game in the eighth as a pinch-runner, lifted Aaron Crow’s pitch over the right-field wall for only his fourth homer of the year.  Joaquin Benoit (4-3) pitched two innings for the Tigers, matching his longest outing of the season.  Crow (3-4) struck out Wilson Betemit with the bases loaded to end the ninth, and he got the first out of the 10th before…

While admitting to some frustrations with current conditions in the U-S government, Second District Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins of Kansas presented what’s being called a “path to prosperity” to Manhattan area business men and women, during a luncheon hosted by the Manhattan Area Chamber of commerce Tuesday. Jenkins admits to KMAN news it hasn’t been easy in Washington D.C. these days, with what she describes as a divided government.Jenkins has harsh criticism of the U-S Senate, saying when they don’t pass a budget, they don’t pass an appropriations bill. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have placed offensive tackle Ryan O’Callaghan on injured reserve and released backup kicker Todd Carter to reach the 80-player roster limit before Tuesday’s deadline. O’Callaghan had missed nearly all of training camp with an undisclosed injury. He was picked up off waivers before the 2009 season and started 12 games that year, but he was injured in training camp last season and Barry Richardson took over the starting job. Carter was signed on Aug. 10 as a second kicker in camp, but he’s played sparingly in three preseason games and never challenged…

Concerns and questions filled the auditorium at the Manhattan Public Library Tuesday evening when a community health care forum was presented by the Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice. People of many different age groups and backgrounds, as well as many involved in the healthcare field were in attendance to ask questions of the three panelists. The panelists represented Pawnee Mental Health, Mercy Regional Health Center, and Konza Prairie Community Health and Dental Center. Questions ranged from insurance issues, to low income health care, and all the way to Medicare and Medicaid.
