He had been 0-1 in five starts since a May 13 win at St. Louis. “That’s what we expect,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “That’s where he put the bar, and now we expect him to meet it.” Camilo Doval pitched the ninth for his…

Manhattan’s seen widespread tree damage following a severe storm that gusted the city with 100 mile per hour straight line winds on Saturday, June 11, prompting the city to coordinate a citywide cleanup effort beginning next Tuesday. In a similar fashion to the annual citywide Spring cleanup the City of Manhattan organizes around the beginning of April, the community will be divided into zones with different days assigned for crews to pass through to pick up debris. Residents are encouraged to pile limbs and branches on the ground next to the curb for ease of pickup and to stack the…
A 21 year-old white-handed gibbon from the Sunset Zoo passed away on Monday. Dempsey, a male gibbon, was diagnosed with kidney disease in January of this year. His condition continued to decline and zoo employees worked to make sure he received proper food and medication to help slow the disease’s progression. The Sunset Zoo released a statement about his passing which said, “On June 10, veterinary staff anesthetized him and transported Dempsey to K-State Veterinary Health Center for further testing. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Dempsey’s kidneys had become nonfunctional. At that time, the difficult decision was made to humanely…
With storm damage in Riley County nearing 10 million dollars, the National Weather Service in Topeka has determined the cause of damage to be straight line winds and not a tornado. Information released Monday indicates some areas of Manhattan experienced straight line wind speeds in the realm of 100 miles per hour, which emergency personnel say rival the wind speeds of an EF1 tornado – minus the rotation. Even so, Riley County Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey says it should still be taken seriously. He says radar indicated a tornado debris signature and tight rotation in the storm in Olsburg in…
