(AP) — Top Republican legislators in Kansas are focusing on helping conservative parents remove their children from public schools over what’s taught about gender and sexuality rather than pursuing a version of what critics call Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. Following the Friday release of video showing the brutal beating death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis Police officers, Riley County Police Department Director Brian Peete has issued a statement condemning the violence. In a letter to the community released on Monday, Peete says that while he doesn’t know specifics about what happened in Memphis, he has watched the videos and says “it’s abundantly clear that the officers involved failed to utilize appropriate training when arresting Mr. Nichols. Elected officials are required to review districts to ensure equal population rates. Riley County residents comprise three districts, each represented by a commissioner. The districts were contiguous to each other years ago. County Clerk Rich Vargo explains. Vargo says the districts must be less than a 5% variation in population, and the current districts are within that range.
