Manhattan City Commissioners unanimously approved expanding the Downtown sales tax and revenue (STAR) bond district on first reading at their Tuesday meeting, and now look to March 15 to finalize approval. Gov. Laura Kelly was in attendance Friday for a windy groundbreaking ceremony for the new USD 475 elementary school at Fort Riley. Kelly joined key figures involved in the new school’s planning in donning hard hats and digging in with shovels at the Leonard Avenue site that afternoon. The 81,000 square foot facility is being built where Jefferson Elementary School once stood, ringing in at more than $30 million to construct. Riley County commissioners have settled on Leonardville as the future location for a new ambulance station. EMS Director David Adams presented options to the commission Thursday, for both Leonardville and Randolph. He says the first option, in Randolph would’ve covered the city, Leonardville, and University Park. Both options would keep the county shop’s station open, which would have Sherman Road as its most northern border. Option two in Leonardville would cover the city, Randolph and Riley. A man convicted for a 2019 shooting in Manhattan will spend at least 36 years in prison, following emotional testimony Thursday by the victim’s family. Richard Goens was convicted of first degree murder among other charges in January for the killing of Tanner Zamecnik in what was described by prosecutors as a robbery plot gone wrong. Goens was also convicted on five other charges stemming from the evening of Nov. 1, 2019, including attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. GREELEY, Kan. — Fire officials are investigating after two adults and a child were found dead in house fire in eastern Kansas. Anderson County Sheriff Veron Valentine said the fire was reported early Wednesday in Greeley. Valentine said the home was engulfed in flames when volunteer firefighters arrived. When firefighters were able to enter the home, they found the bodies of two adults and a child. Greeley is a town of about 300 people about 60 miles south of Kansas City.
