Riley County Commissioners approved a proposal Monday to construct new turn lanes on Marlatt Avenue to help detour traffic when the Kansas Department of Transportation begins construction on two new roundabouts in 2025. Those projects will be constructed where Tuttle Creek Blvd. intersects Seth Child and Hwy 13. Riley County Public Works Director John Ellerman spoke to commissioners about the proposal at Monday’s meeting. The design firm estimates reconstruction plans would cost $658,000, which includes fees for the company’s work. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly on Monday vetoed a bill that would have cut taxes in Kansas by nearly $1.4 billion over the next three years, objecting to a proposal included by conservative Republicans to impose a single-rate “flat” income tax for individuals. Poyntz Avenue in downtown Manhattan was closed to traffic Saturday morning. Christopher Troy, 34, of Leondardville was arrested on April 21, 2023, around 11:00 a.m. on his Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. The warrant stems from a December 9, 2020, burglary in the 15900 block of Caley Rd. north of Leonardville where it was reported Troy broke into a shed and stole numerous tools for an approximate loss of $3,000. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is joining a fledgling effort that could one day make it easier to hire teachers from other states. A bill that Gov. Laura Kelly signed Thursday makes Kansas the latest member of the Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact, The Topeka Capital-Journal reports. The compact is a creation of the Council of State Governments, with heavy backing from the U.S. Department of Defense, which wanted to create an easier pathway to teacher licensure for military personnel and their spouses as they move around the country. Authorities arrested two individuals Thursday, including a fourth suspect in the March 6 shooting in the Sunset Zoo parking lot. Officers with the Riley County Police Department conducted a search warrant in the 1500 block of Hillcrest Drive, uncovering illegal drugs and guns. The investigation led to the arrests of 20-year-old Manhattan residents Thesiaus Robinson and Sierra Wells. Both are charged with distribution of marijuana, criminal use of weapons, two counts each of distribution of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
