FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct a nationwide test of the emergency alert system and wireless emergency alerts Wednesday.
The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (also known as IPAWS) is FEMA’s national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the NOAA Weather Radio.
This means you will receive a notification on your personal cell phone, as well as on radio and TV.
IPAWS allows alerting authorities to write their own message using commercially available software that is Common Alerting Protocol compliant. More information is available at FEMA.gov.
The nationwide test will be conducted at approximately 1:20 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
