Riley County commissioners held an election canvass during their meeting Monday. The purpose of the canvass is to review the provisional ballots from the general election with the commission.  County Clerk Rich Vargo says the provisional ballots are the only ballots left to count. There were 142 provisional ballots, with 102 recommended to be considered valid.  Each ballot is recommended to be either valid, partially valid, or invalid. TOPEKA, Kan. — A 58-year-old Kansas inmate convicted of attempted murder for assaulting a corrections officer in 2019 has been sentenced to more than 54 years in prison for the attack. Ray Miles, of Topeka, was convicted in August of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and battery against a corrections officer. Prosecutors said Miles tried to stab Shawnee County corrections officer Kourtney Flynn several times with a pen in July 2019 before other workers restrained him. Miles was in the jail to serve the remaining year of his sentences for attacking several employees of a Topeka television station in 2012.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A 29-year-old woman is charged with killing a Kansas City, Kansas, woman who was on her way home from volunteering at church. Authorities announced Monday that Melanie Perry is charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. Investigators allege she killed 62-year-old Lillian Jackson on Sept. 18. Jackson was driving home from Mount Zion Baptist Church when she was caught in rolling gun battle. Her car was hit several times, killing her instantly. Perry, of Kansas City, Kansas, faces other unrelated charges and has been in the Wyandotte County jail since Oct. 20.

WICHITA, Kan. — A man in a wheelchair has died after being hit by a car as he crossed a street in Wichita. Police say the crash happened around 8 p.m. Monday in a business district just northwest of the Wichita State University campus. Police say the man was crossing Hillside Street when a northbound car hit him. The man was declared dead at the scene. Police have not released the man’s name, but say he was in his 60s. The driver of the car remained at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with police. Investigators are trying…

Manhattan Fire Department responded to two small house fires on Monday. MFD responded to the 2900 block of Hickory lane around 2:45 pm for a report of a mower on fire spreading to the house. Upon arrival, crews found the mower on fire under a deck. The fire was contained within 10 minutes and smoke was ventilated from the home. A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus.
