The Pottawatomie County Commission met with department heads Monday to discuss how to spend federal COVID-19 stimulus funds. Pott. County has so far received about $2.4 million, with another approximately $2.4 million set to arrive in the near future. Ideas ranged from Justice Center security upgrades and a storm-water detention pond to a drone program, which Sheriff Shane Jager says would be useful for his department and many others. The Republican River Compact Administration will hold its 2021 annual meeting next week in Nebraska. The meeting will focus on water-related issues and activities, including compact compliance, within the Republican River basin in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. The meeting is planned for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 with a work session prior to the meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. It will take place at McCook Community College in McCook, Nebraska and a link to the virtual meeting can be accessed at agriculture.gov/RRCA. WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita police are investigating a shooting death at a birthday party. Police say 25-year-old Robertino Gomez, of Wichita, was killed Sunday night in south Wichita. A suspect, 42-year-old Marcello Ibarra, is jailed on possible charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm and a warrant out of Arizona. Police say when Ibarra decided to leave the party, Gomez went to check on him. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and found Gomez shot. He died at the scene. Police spokesman Officer Trevor Macy said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

Riley County EMS reported July was their busiest month in the history of the department for calls for service. Speaking to the county commission, EMS Director David Adams says they answered a total of 501 calls for the month. Adams broke the call volume down by each of the four stations in the county. The two stations with the highest call volume are located in Manhattan, with a combined call volume of 346 of the 501 calls. WICHITA, Kan. — Police in Wichita say a shooting has killed a man in his 20s, injured another and led to the arrest of a person suspected in the killing. Police say the shooting happened around 9 p.m. Sunday on a south Wichita street when a fight led to gunfire. Investigators say one man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not specified. Police said another person was arrested. Police have not released the names of any of the people involved.

ATCHISON, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says an Atchison man is dead after the utility vehicle he was driving crashed into a car. Television station KSNT reports that the crash happened Saturday afternoon, killing 26-year-old Eli Whittaker. Investigators say Whittaker was driving a UTV on Kansas Highway 7 when he swerved to try to avoid another UTV in front of him that had slowed for traffic. Troopers say Whittaker hit the other UTV, then crossed into the patch of oncoming traffic and was hit by a car. Whittaker died at the scene. Investigators say he was not wearing a…

ROLLA, Kan. — Authorities say a southwest Kansas firefighter died after being shocked by power lines while working at the scene of a traffic crash. Morton County Emergency Management officials said the firefighter and a sheriff’s deputy were the first to arrive at the accident site Sunday afternoon just south of Rolla. The responders were searching for victims when the firefighter was shocked by damaged power lines. Emergency management says CPR was performed at the scene but the firefighter died later at a hospital. The firefighter’s name has not been released. An investigation is continuing.
