LENEXA, Kan. — Police in Lenexa say a 20-year-old man is dead following a shooting at a local apartment complex. Police say the shooting happened around 1 p.m. Monday at the Lenexa Crossing Apartments. Investigators say the suspected shooter called 911 to report it and stayed on the scene until police arrived. Police said the shooter and victim knew each other and that the shooter reported he accidentally fired the weapon, hitting the other man in the back. Neither the victim’s name nor the name of the suspected shooter had been released by early Tuesday morning.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Leavenworth officials say a 25-year-old man is in custody after his young brother was shot to death over the weekend. Leavenworth County Undersheriff Jim Sherley said officers went to a home just outside Leavenworth city limits Saturday night. They found a 17-year-old dead from a gunshot wound. The victim’s brother was arrested. He is being held in the Leavenworth County Jail. County Attorney Todd Thompson said Tuesday he is waiting for investigators’ reports before determining charges. The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released.
TOPEKA, Kan. — Topeka police say a 17-year-old girl who was shot over the holiday weekend has died from her injuries. Police announced Tuesday that Navaeh Martinez, who was shot late Saturday, had died. A 21-year-old suspect, Daisha Butler, was arrested Sunday. She is being held in the Shawnee County jail on updated potential charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Police have not released any other information about the shooting.

FRONTENAC, Kan. — A 73-year-old Kansas man was killed after a crash in southeast Kansas. The Kansas Highway Patrol said Virgil McCulloch was driving Saturday night in Frontenac, Kansas, when his SUV went off the road. The vehicle hit a set of mailboxes and a driveway, then sped up rapidly and hit a concrete storm ditch culvert. He was taken to a hospital in Pittsburg where he died.
WICHITA, Kan. — Police have identified a man who was killed in a Wichita shooting over the weekend that also injured two other people. Police say in a news release that 49-year-old Shay Prewitt, of Wichita, was found dead by officers called out around 1:30 a.m. Sunday for reports of shooting in southeast Wichita. TOPEKA, Kan. — Authorities have identified a man whose body was pulled late last week from a creek just outside Topeka. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday that the body of 25-year-old Lashawn Mady, of Topeka, was recovered Friday afternoon from Shunganunga Creek just east of Topeka. Investigators say no foul play is suspected in Mady’s death, but an investigation into how he died is continuing. Sheriff’s officials say authorities were notified of Mady’s death around 3:15 p.m. Friday. No other details have been released.
June sales tax numbers are in for the City of Manhattan. The city’s one-percent sales tax brought in around $1.04 million in revenue for June 2021. This is up nearly $272,000 from June 2020, when the city brought in about $767,000. The jump comes out to an approximately 35.5 percent increase from one year ago. The two categories that drove the increase were Retail Trade and Accommodation and Food Services, which rose from about $508,000 to $690,000 and from $91,000 to $146,000, respectively. National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility officials have continued hiring efforts despite the presence of a pandemic over the past year or so. NBAF deputy director Sarah Ziegler spoke to KMAN Friday about some of their more recent employment numbers. NBAF communications director Katie Pawlosky says the staff is a good mix of federal-government veterans and people who come from the private industry. She also says just under 50 percent of team members could potentially serve over 20 years at the facility.
