The Manhattan City Commission approved an ordinance on first reading to set the budget for 2022, a budget that will see a 3.499 mill levy increase. Mayor Wynn Butler noted the frustration he’s hearing from property owners as he provided the only “no” vote. Commissioner Aaron Estabrook, though, made clear that he’s concerned with a lack of interest in dealing with current issues bedeviling city operations. ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Arkansas City police say four people were injured when a driver attempted to flee from a traffic stop. Police say an officer tried to stop a truck driven by 27-year-old Casiopia Price, of Arkansas City Tuesday morning because she was believed to be driving with a suspended license. Police say Price drove away and collided with a van. The 46-year-old driver of the van and a 3-year-old passenger were hospitalized in stable condition. DODGE CITY, Kan. — Authorities in southwestern Kansas say a police dog has died after being sent to chase a suspect. Television station KAKE reports that the Ford County Sheriff’s Office reported on its Facebook page that a police dog named Kyra was called in Monday to help in chasing down a suspect in the county. Officials say the female Belgian Malinois began showing signs of distress immediately after the chase and was rushed to a veterinary clinic for emergency surgery. WICHITA, Kan. — Kansas’ hospitals are worried about the upcoming flu season because they’re already strained by the surge in COVID-19 cases. The Wichita Eagle reports that Wichita’s four hospitals have been operating for weeks at full capacity, with limited beds and staff. At various points, they have had to ask ambulances to take patients to other facilities.
