A number of interested parties in Manhattan are working to put together a plan of action for aiding Afghan refugees who may move to the community. City Commissioner and Army veteran Aaron Estabrook and Army veteran, K-State student and Afghan native Fatima Jaghoori are spearheading the effort, with a meeting earlier this week taking place to set the early portions of the plan. The National Bio Agro Defense Facility in Manhattan has several departments working against the spread of foreign animal disease outbreaks. Director of NBAF’s Biologics Development Module, Steve Witte, says that biologics development means they are not working on pharmaceuticals which would require chemical processes, but instead the department is working with biologics which is things like vaccines and antibody therapies. “We’re basically going to take the basic research being done at the USDA and turn it into applied science,” Witte says. The current librarian for the State of Kansas will be taking over as the director of the Manhattan Public Library and the North Central Kansas Library System in time for New Years. Eric Norris will succeed Linda Knupp, who is retiring at the end of the year. He will begin his duties in Manhattan in late December. He has served as the state’s librarian since 2018 and was the director of the Hays Public Library for six years before that. Fort Riley officials have announced a temporary closure of the Parker Access Control Point starting Friday. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of November. The gate, which will close at 7 p.m. Friday, is located on the west edge of Fort Riley, and is formerly known as the Estes Gate. Officials say all other access control points remain open according to normal operating schedules. Construction continues on Henry Drive with traffic through the control point reduced to one lane inbound and outbound. Drivers of oversized vehicles or those towing trailers are advised to exit the installation through…

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police in Kansas City, Kansas, have identified a man shot to death and found in a grassy area under a tree. Police say the body of 19-year-old Johnnie Roades was discovered Tuesday evening by a person walking in the area about two hours after neighbors had reported hearing gunshots. Police have said they have no suspects yet in the case and are asking anyone with information on Roades’ death to contact detectives. Police say the killing was the city’s 30th homicide of the year.

COLBY, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Salina man has died in a two-vehicle crash on a western Kansas roadway. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 70 near Colby when a westbound car driven by 75-year-old Frank Herman briefly went off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed both westbound lanes and the median before colliding with an eastbound pickup truck. Investigators say Herman died at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 27-year-old woman from Breckenridge, Colorado, was seriously injured.
