LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — A 39-year-old Leavenworth woman is charged with stabbing her fiancé to death. Eva Banks is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 44-year-old Jerrold Rhodes. Police say Rhodes was stabbed to death Saturday at a home the couple shared in Leavenworth. Police Chief Pat Kitchens says investigators believe Rhodes’ death was the result of domestic violence. Banks made her first appearance via video in court on Monday. She said she planned to hire an attorney.
WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities say two people have been critically injured in an apartment fire. Television station KAKE reports that firefighters were called around 3 a.m. Tuesday to the complex near the Kellogg and Interstate 135 interchange. Arriving firefighters discovered a person trapped in the apartment, and another person had jumped out the building to escape the flames. Both people were taken to a hospital with critical injuries. TOPEKA, Kan. — Top Republicans are ending Kansas’ state of emergency for the coronavirus pandemic. They refused Tuesday to consider Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s arguments that an extension is still necessary for vaccinations and some testing for COVID-19. Senate President Ty Masterson announced the cancellation of a meeting of eight legislative leaders set for Tuesday afternoon. A law enacted in late March required the legislative leaders to sign off on an extension. The American Red Cross and health care facilities have put out the urgent call for blood donations. Ascension Via Christi President Bob Copple tells KMAN, the hospital recently had it’s usual re-stocking not take place because of the lack of blood taken in through donations. He adds it’s an unexpected consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. Copple says there’s a good reason tied to coronavirus to give blood. A three-million dollar donation from the managing partners of Gates Capital Management will see creation of a financial analysis center in Kansas State University’s College of Business Administration. Alums Jeff Gates and Justin Boisseau made the donation that will result in the center being named after their firm. The center will be housed in the Department of Finance and is expected to aid students preparing for careers in investment banking, asset management, consulting and more. The 2021 street maintenance projects for the City of Manhattan have gotten underway. The City’s annual street maintenance projects started this weekend with asphalt mill and overlay on Marlatt Avenue. This project is taking place between Browning Avenue and Seth Child Road. Several projects starting this week will take place on 8th, 9th, 10th, and Delware Streets from Poyntz Avenue to Colorado Street. WICHITA, Kan. — A fire disrupted opening night at the Crown Uptown Theatre in Wichita after lighting appeared to strike the nearly 100-year-old building. General manager Max Wilson said actors who were rehearsing for another show at the church across the street saw lighting hit the theater before the building’s lights flickered and surged and a loud jolt was heard. Wilson said a burning smell and smoke coming from the basement tipped performers that something was wrong.
