On Friday night, it’s a similar story as the No. 2-seeded Indians play host to No. 3-seed Wichita Northwest for the fifth matchup between the familiar foes since 2022. During that 2022 season, Manhattan beat the Grizzlies twice for a perfect state title season. Then, last year, the Indians added another Northwest win. By Emma Loura/Manhattan Mercury No election outcomes changed as a result of the official canvass, Riley County officials said Thursday. The Riley County Commission, acting as the Board of County Canvassers, approved the final certification of official election results as presented at Thursday’s meeting. The results posted on election night were the unofficial results, as elections staff still needed to count provisional ballots. A provisional ballot allows a registered voter to participate in an election if there is an eligibility issue like an address or name change within 30 days of an election. A veteran of the Manhattan city government says he may be hanging it up soon. Longtime city commissioner and Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Board chair John Matta on Thursday said on KMAN’s “Within Reason with Mike Matson” it’s unlikely he will seek re-election next year, though he didn’t completely rule it out. “People say ‘never, say never,’ but right now I would say the chances are I won’t run,” Matta said. Officers filed a report of an injury accident on November 13, 2024, at approximately 6:17 AM at the corner of Marlatt Ave. and Matter Dr.  Officers report a 2018 Jeep Cherokee driven by Akeema Jones-Greene crossed the center line and was traversing into oncoming traffic. Alec Marenco swerved his 2019 GMC Sierra to avoid the oncoming vehicle but Jones-Greene corrected back to her lane and the two vehicles collided head on. One person was injured in a hit-and-run collision that occurred just before 6 a.m. Tuesday in Geary County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an unknown vehicle was westbound on Interstate 70 near the U.S. 77 exit. The vehicle then rear-ended a Dodge Neon driven by 38-year-old Christina Murphy of Junction City. After impact the Dodge traveled off the road and struck a tree. The other vehicle fled the scene. EMS transported Murphy to Stormont Vail Health-Flint Hills Campus. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

From a press release by Major League Baseball Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. have been named winners of the 2024 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, as announced tonight by Louisville Slugger. Perez was voted a winner over three other American League finalists at the catcher position: Houston’s Yainer Diaz, Oakland’s Shea Langeliers and Seattle’s Cal Raleigh. This marks Salvy’s fifth career Silver Slugger Award, following 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021, extending his franchise record, ahead of Hall of Famer George Brett, who won the award three times. Police released more details Tuesday about a man arrested Friday after a high-speed chase. Prior to the chase, police said, 23-year-old Andrew Franklin of Manhattan went on a crime spree that involved stealing from two stores and taking a gun and car from a woman’s home. On Thursday at 11:24 p.m. officers responded to a report of a business alarm activation at Dick’s Sporting Goods in the 401 Third Place in Manhattan. Three minors were responsible for a warehouse fire in Manhattan Saturday afternoon, according to Riley County Police Department officials. Police arrested two 15-year-olds — Jakeem Coopwood Jr. and Jordan Ehret — as well as an unnamed 12-year old after a witness reported seeing them running away from a fire at a large warehouse under construction in the 1200 block of Kretschmer Drive. The two teenagers remained in custody as of Tuesday, while officers released the 12-year-old to their parents. The full story can be read at The Mercury.
