LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is allowing beer and wine sales at a restaurant in the Memorial Union. The Impromptu Cafe in the union began selling beer and wine Tuesday. David Mucci, director of the union, said the cafe is the only place on campus where alcohol is sold in a retail setting. He says it’s a way to “test the waters” for businesses on campus that could sell alcohol on campus. Alcohol is also sold at the university’s football stadium on games days. LAWRENCE — The Lawrence mayor is calling the vandalism of her home during a commission meeting that focused on homelessness politically motivated. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Mayor Jennifer Ananda said Tuesday that someone threw a brick through one of her home’s windows last week in the midst of an at times tense discussion about funding for the local shelter. She said the brick contained a message related to the homeless issue. Speaking at the start of this week’s meeting, Ananda said that though she understands and applauds conscious and heartfelt activism, the vandal’s violent actions were unproductive and harmful.
Officers filed a report for burglary in the 700 block of Dondee Drive in Manhattan on January 21, 2020, at approximately 5:10 PM. Officers listed a 44-year-old female as the victim when she reported an unknown suspect entered her storage unit and took miscellaneous items. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $500.00. Police ask that anyone with information please contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Manhattan High School’s Career and Technical Development held their first Explore CTE day for area middle school students. 8th grade students from Eisenhower and Anthony Middle Schools shadowed students at Manhattan High School during their career elective classes. CTE Coordinator Chris Holborn says while they have done something similar in the past, this is their first year doing it this way. “We asked our pathway teachers to ask their students who have taken these courses to show these 8th graders around and have the teachers teach the class,” says Holburn. K-State will be putting on the Industrial Hemp Conference at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center in Wichita on February 4th. The event will go from 8:30 a.m. til 4 p.m. and will feature officials presenting the latest information on growing hemp in Kansas based on university research trials. John C. Pair Horticultural Research Center and Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center officials will also be part of the conference. A woman from Wamego was taken to Wamego Health Center yesterday after icy roads caused her vehicle to roll over Monday morning. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Beth M. Brunkow, 69, was heading east on Oregon Trail Rd. near Onaga Rd. in a 1999 GMC Jimmy when icy conditions caused her to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then went into the ditch and rolled one time. Brunkow’s injury was reported by authorities as minor. The wreck was reported at 11:23 a.m. at the 20500 block of Oregon Trail Rd..

Community members gathered at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel this morning for a morning of prayer and remembrance during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast Program. The main event of the program was a speech delivered by Bishop Darryl Martin, the founder of Manhattan Christian Fellowship Church, who reflected on King’s teachings in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
