Officers filed a report of an injury accident on October 10, 2024, at approximately 4:43 PM at the intersection of McCall Road and Tuttle Creek Blvd.  Officers reported Jordan Zimmerman, 26, of Manhattan, improperly crossed five lanes of traffic on his bicycle resulting in a collision with Barrett Stokes, 29, also of Manhattan, who was driving a 2016 Chevy Sonic.  Zimmerman was transported by EMS to Via Christi for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. Former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody returned earlier this week to the town where he raided a newspaper to face a dozen journalists along with a felony charge for his actions after the raid. Cody led police in the Aug. 11, 2023, raid on the Marion County Record, the editor’s home and a councilwoman’s home under the false pretense that a newspaper reporter had committed identity theft by looking up restaurateur Kari Newell’s driving record. By Emma Loura/Manhattan Mercury Local officials are seeking a grant that provides resources to help communities protect against wildfires. Together with the Kansas Forest Service, the Riley County Emergency Management and Fire Department applied for a Community Fire Defense Grant. “That protection plan is a guide for public entities and citizens on practices, techniques, things to keep in mind on how to prepare for or protect your property for a wildfire,” said Russel Stukey, Riley County emergency management director. The senior transfer is the first Wildcat to earn the preseason honor. MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – Kansas State senior transfer Coleman Hawkins has been named the Preseason Big 12 co-Newcomer of the Year by the league coaches, as the Big 12 announced its annual preseason poll and all-conference teams on Thursday (Oct. 10). A Manhattan woman finds herself in trouble following an arrest on Wednesday evening in Manhattan. Mandy Torres, 44, was arrested just after 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Griffith Drive on a charge of aggravated burglary by dwelling for felony, theft, domestic violence or sex. Torres was booked into Riley County Jail on a bond of $15,000. She remains confined at the time of this report.

A fire caused a loss of more than $50,000 to a garage on the east side of Manhattan Wednesday morning. The fire at 2017 Green Ave. started in the 1996 Ford Bronco parked in the detached garage and spread to the rest of the structure. The Manhattan Fire Department dispatched crews a 11:27 a.m., and on arrival they found heavy smoke showing from the garage. A Manhattan man sustained life-threatening injuries after another man shot him in apparent self-defense in the parking lot of the Douglass Center Wednesday evening. Riley County Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Tokoi said in a written release officers responded to the report of shots fired in the 900 block of Yuma Street around 7:57 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old man shot in the parking lot. Tokoi said RCPD’s early investigation points to the shooter being a 26-year-old man who acted in self-defense.
