From K-State Athletics Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie announced today that sophomore center Maary Lakes has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules and conduct detrimental to the program. “This is a very disappointing outcome as Maary was a student-athlete with so much potential,” Mittie said. “But, we have certain standards and expectations that all of our student-athletes must meet and when those standards are not met, there are consequences. From K-State Athletics . . . Former Kansas State men’s basketball player Keith Amerson, for whom the team’s Academic Award is named, recently passed away at the age of 50 (December 29). A native of Los Angeles, California, Amerson played two seasons (1989-91) for the Wildcats for head coaches Lon Kruger and Dana Altman, helping the school to the 1990 NCAA Tournament. Kansas State started the 23rd season of Big 12 Conference action on Wednesday night at (25/rv) Iowa State. The Cyclones defended Hilton Coliseum with a 96-58 win. K-State has now lost seven straight Big 12 openers. K-State was led by guards Kayla Goth and Jasauen Beard. Goth registered her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists.
