From K-State Athletics The Big 12 Conference named K-State redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne as its Rookie of the Week after leading the Wildcats in kills, hitting percentage and digs in a straight-set win over West Virginia Saturday, the league office announced Monday. Heyne, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, collects her second weekly honor of the season after picking up 11 kills while hitting .450 to go with a career-best 10 digs for the first double-double of her career against the Mountaineers. Announced on the team’s Twitter account, Manhattan High boys soccer coach Frank Alonso passed away on Sunday morning. He had been battling stage IV pancreatic cancer. Alonso was 52. Deemed inoperable by doctors, Coach Alonso was diagnosed with this disease on October 15. Once the community heard about the news, a GoFundMe page created to support Alonso’s fight and it raised $45,344 as of Monday morning. Campbell Trophy, Kansas State senior right tackle Dalton Risner added another line to his off-the-field resume on Thursday by being named a semifinalist for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy, the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach (FL) announced. Manhattan High’s Daniel Harkin finished as the 6A state runner up in cross country on Saturday in Lawrence. He finished with a time of 15 minutes and 55 seconds. Harkin’s decorated career includes placing at state in track and tennis in addition to cross country. He was a part of last year’s MHS state championship in track and finished in the top ten in state in both the 1600 meters and 3200 meters.
