Road projects are causing some delays for residents in northern Riley County.
Perhaps the most notable is on K-16, the Green Randolph Road bridge over Tuttle Creek Lake. The Kansas Department of Transportation began a mill and overlay Monday, extending from Randolph east to Hwy 99. USD 384 Blue Valley Superintendent John Cox says it’s causing 15 to 20 minute delays to and from school.
“It really has put us in a situation with our buses because we shuttle kids back and forth but we’re trying to accommodate and make adjustments as needed. Busing after school is the biggest impact because our kids will be getting home about 15 minutes later than they normally would,” Cox said.
Motorists are being directed through the work zone by a flagger and a pilot car during daylight hours.
In Riley, there’s no construction yet, but USD 378 Riley County Superintendent Cliff Williams says Falcon Road, in front of the high school, will close next week.
“That’s to happen approximately May 6. There will be a detour but they’ll be replacing a bridge there and it will take about four months,” Williams said.
The last day of classes in Riley County is May 14. Blue Valley’s last day is May 28.
