WICHITA — Authorities say a Kansas sheriff’s deputy and a suspect were killed during a fight that broke out as the suspect was being arrested.
The Wichita Eagle reports that Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says Deputy Robert Kunze was shot Sunday about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown Wichita after responding to a call about a suspicious person. Easter says Kunze patted down the suspect’s waistband and found a 40-caliber handgun. Kunze was handcuffing the suspect when the fight began.
Easter says Kunze’s service weapon was discharged, but investigators don’t know if the suspect’s handgun was fired.
Another deputy who responded found Kunze on the ground along with the suspect, whose name hasn’t been released. The deputy died at a hospital, while the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
