The Riley County Relay for Life kicked off on Friday at Cico park. Participants gathered for what organizers say was a large turn out to date for the county.
Event organizer, and survivor herself, Melissa Mills-Turnbull explains that the event is important for those involved with the struggle to combat the disease, and it helps on many levels to help fund the American Cancer Society.
Susan Schindler says participants do a variety of things to support the Relay for Life, and one rivalry for top honors at the event had come to a head as the Riley County Police Department squared off against the Fire Department in a cook off. The RCPD won, and took home the trophy… although there were allegations of a “ringer” being used on their team.
Over $30,000 was raised at the event by 29 teams.
