K-State senior safety Ty Zimmerman was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award on Monday, which is given to the top defensive back in college football. Zimmerman joins fellow Big 12 seniors Aaron Colvin of Oklahoma and Jason Verrett of TCU among the nominees. The three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Monday, November 25th and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12th airing on ESPN.
Zimmerman is K-State’s 2nd leading tackler with 55 stops including three for loss. He has one interception, which he returned for a 32-yard touchdown against Louisiana earlier this season. Zimmerman also has forced a fumble, and has broken up four passes.
The Junction City native is the fifth individual in school history to be named a semifinalist following Jamie Mendez (1993), Chris Canty (1995 and 1996), Terence Newman (2001 and 2002) and Nigel Malone (2011 and 2012).
