ESPN.com is reporting that Texas Tech starting quarterback Baker Mayfield will transfer from the school after meeting with coach Kliff Kingsbury on Tuesday. Mayfield cites a “miscommunication” with the coaching staff as his reason for leaving Tech. The Austin, Texas native is a true freshman walk-on and would still need to get a release from the school to transfer.
Mayfield started eight games for the Red Raiders as he missed four contests mid-season due to injury. He passed for 2,315 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Fellow true freshman Davis Webb and sophomore Michael Brewer now will battle to start under center for Tech in the Holiday Bowl against Arizona State on December 30th.
