TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas Court of Appeals judge is scheduled to go before a Senate committee to discuss the judicial branch and recommendations to solve ongoing budget issues.
Judge Patrick McAnany is set to testify Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee as it considers several bills to improve efficiencies in the court system, with a goal of closing a projected $8.25 million shortfall in the judicial budget for next year.
McAnany presided over a special commission in 2011 appointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss to find ways to improve judicial branch operations, including changes in staffing and filing of records.
Nuss has said that unless legislators provide additional funds for the fiscal year beginning July 1, he may be forced to furlough court employees as he did in 2012.
