K-State got big contributions from two newcomers, including a double-double from Leticia Romero, enroute to an 85-64 exhibition victory over Washburn at Bramlage Coliseum on Monday night.
Romero, the former standout on the Spanish national team, scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds. Riley County product Kelly Thomson came off the bench and hit 4 of 7 three pointers on her way to a 14 point night. “It was an awesome experience”, said the former Falcon, “just to be out there”.
Wildcat head coach Deb Patterson is fielding a very young team. She credited Haley Texada and Chantay Caron with providing much-needed leadership. The Wildcats were also aggressive from long range (7-29), and made 20 of 25 free throws. “That’s what we’ve been so in need of”, said Patterson. “When we do that it’s going to give us a chance. I liked the way we never backed down”.
Texada (15) and Erica Young (10) also scored in double figures. The announced attendance was 3617. The women will play their final tune-up this Friday against Alaska-Anchorage as part of a double-header with Bruce Weber’s men’s squad. Our coverage will begin at 5:15.
