TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is launching a new “Walk of Honor” at its Statehouse, and the first honoree is former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole.
Dole, now 88, was expected to attend Friday’s ceremony in Topeka, along with his wife, Elizabeth, a former senator from North Carolina.
A panel of Kansas historians recently named Dole as one of the state’s 25 most notable figures as part of Kansas’ ongoing celebration of the 150th anniversary of its statehood. Dole, a Russell native, served more than 35 years in Congress and was the 1996 Republican presidential nominee.
Plans call for the new walk at the Statehouse to feature a bronze plaque set in a sidewalk for each honoree, with up to three new ones each year.
