Economic Development ratings from last year were presented to the Manhattan City Commission at Tuesday night’s work session at City Hall. The ratings were based on a variety of factors including number of jobs created, the amount of the City’s investment, and amounts of capital generated. All businesses but one were given high ratings, many surpassing their goals by significant numbers.
Also discussed was the Road and Bridge half-cent sales tax, which will end in 2012. The Commission agreed that a renewal of the tax would be on the ballot in the next election, and much discussion was had as to what to do with tax revenues should the measure pass. Most agreed that using a percentage to lower property taxes would be a good idea. USD 383 Board of Education members were present, and approached the Commission to ask that some revenues be directed towards education. The matter will be discussed further by the Commission, along with USD 383 officials and the County Commission.
