The Manhattan High School Girls Basketball team completed a perfect record in Centennial League play with a 42-32 victory at Topeka High on Friday night in the regular season finale. Manhattan fell behind the Trojans 20-8 after the first quarter before outscoring Topeka High 34-12 the rest of the way.
Three Lady Indians were in double figures led by Elayna Spilker and Darby Price with 12 points apiece while Onyeka Eyhee had 11 points. The Lady Indians who are 18-2 overall clinch the #1 seed in the Sub-State and will host a first round game on Wednesday night at the Manhattan High School Gymnasium against an opponent to be determined.
Meanwhile, it was a tough night for the MHS Boys as they fell to Topeka High 64-42 in their regular season closer. The Trojans raced out to a 7-0 first quarter lead before the Tribe closed the gap to 15-11. Topeka High then closed the period with a 10-0 run. Manhattan trailed 37-26 at the half before the Trojans pulled away in the 2nd half.
Brandon Payne was Manhattan’s leading scorer with 13 points and Freshman Peyton Stephens chipped in with nine. Manhattan finishes the regular season with a 9-11 overall mark and 6-7 in the Centennial League.
The Tribe will likely head to Derby on Thursday, March 1 for their first sub-state game….brackets are expected to be released on Saturday.
