Economic Development application, Library expansion talk at City Commission meeting

Tuesday night’s Manhattan City Commission meeting brought good news for a local company. CivicPlus, a Manhattan-based webpage developer for community websites with clients all across the U.S. and Canada, had the second reading of their economic development funding application. The Commission’s reaction was very positive, with Commissioner Jim Sherow calling it “the best economic development proposal [he’d] ever seen brought forward.” The application passed second reading by a vote of four to zero, with Commissioner Rich Jankovic abstaining due to business concerns.

Also discussed was a possible expansion to Manhattan Public Library’s Children’s Library. Library Board members communicated their desire to expand the children’s library to include more technology, more space for programs, and more materials. The project in total has an estimated cost of 2.25 million dollars, some of which could be raised by private funding. No action was taken on the item, and it will likely be further discussed at a later date.
