K-State blanks ‘Hawks in series opener

The Kansas State Baseball team didn’t let a 90-minute rain delay deter them in their quest to make the Big 12 Tournament as the Wildcats opened the Sunflower Showdown against the arch-rival Kansas Jayhawks with a 2-0 victory on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Batcats plated single runs in the second and sixth innings while Kayvon Bahramzedeh worked five and two thirds scoreless innings to pick up the win with Matt Applegate and Gerardo Esquivel providing the relief.   It was K-State’s first shutout of KU in more than four years and the first time they held a conference opponent scoreless since shutting out Oklahoma during the 2011 season.

K-State is now 23-27 overall and 4-15 overall and trails the Jayhawks by a half game for the eighth and final spot in the Big 12 Tournament to be held later this month in Oklahoma City.

Game two of the series is Saturday evening at 6:30.  All the action can be heard on KMAN beginning with the BD4 pre-game show at 6:00.
