K-State Rallies Past Minnesota For Mid-Week Split

Ross Kivett singled home Blair DeBord from third base in the bottom of the eighth inning to give K-State a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium. The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Cats with single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings. K-State pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a DeBord RBI double and Tanner Witt’s sacrifice fly. Shane Conlon tied the game at 3 in the seventh with a towering solo home run to right field.

After Wildcat starter Blake McFadden gave up two earned runs in four innings, the bullpen was brilliant as they gave up just two hits in five innings, while striking out five. Levi MaVorhis went three innings, Jake Matthys (3-0) pitched the eighth for his second win in the last five days, and Tanner Witt earned his fourth save. DeBord led K-State (13-8) with three hits, while Kivett and Jon Davis each had two. Lance Thonvold (1-2) suffered the loss for Minnesota (13-9), giving up Kivett’s RBI single in the 8th inning.

K-State will host Bethune-Cookman this weekend in a three-game series that’s already been altered once again by impending weather. A doubleheader will be played on Friday at 1:00pm, and a Saturday first pitch is set for 2:00pm. Coverage on Friday begins at 12:30pm with the BD4 Distributing pregame show at 1350kman.com and K-State HDTV.
