The Wamego City Commission addressed issues associated with the Water system. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page said a recent study by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment found certain chemicals in Wamego’s water supply. All the chemicals were determined to be within safe levels for human consumption, but Page said the City wanted to be proactive. He said the KDHE offered a granulated activated charcoal filter system to the City, with a caveat that it needed to be entirely enclosed.
According to Page, requests for proposal to build the facility to house the filter system were sent out, with two being received. Construction, Inc.’s bid was lowest at $165,192, while Walters Morgan Construction submitted a bid of $193,362. The construction of the facility is time sensitive and was granted to Construction, Inc.
The Wamego City Commission approved the formation of a committee to study pool facility needs. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the issue from the last meeting to form an ad hoc committee to study the future needs of the pool facility. Page said there has been interest in the committee and named Jan Eichman, Steve Land, Jeff Wicks, Zack Brunner, Jace Ward, Ben Huddelston, with Bill Ditto as Commission representative and Page as the non-voting member.
At the last meeting, Commissioner Bill Ditto suggested looking at the Pool Facility becoming a public/private partnership. Page said the budget will drive the scope of the development of the partnership idea.
In other business, the Commission approved the reappointment of City Manager Merl Page to the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency board for another two-year term. Commissioner Vic Enns is the second Wamego representative to this board.
